Young Members Meeting at the fib symposium 2025

Every year, during the fib symposium, young professionals and researchers from the fib community gather to exchange ideas, discuss topics related to their field, and expand their network.

This year, we are introducing a fresh and innovative format to enhance collaboration and engagement. A series of virtual sessions will be held in advance to discuss current scientific, technical, and societal topics. Each session will conclude with key takeaways and action points that will be finalized on the day of the conference.

On the conference day, a dedicated working session will be held in a roundtable format to consolidate the insights gathered from the virtual discussions. The event will culminate with a final restitution session, where mentors will provide guidance and feedback on the proposed outcomes, followed by a networking cocktail.

Below, you will find details on the virtual and in-person sessions, along with registration information.

Virtual Session 1: Scientific and Technical Challenges

In the field of structural engineering, there are still many barriers to overcome to improve the performance of our structures. This session will present recent scientific advancements, identify challenges, and propose potential solutions. The outcome of this discussion will be the formulation of a research project to be implemented.

Objective: Development of an academic research project
Guest Speakers: (will be specified later)

Moderator: Dr. Fogue Djombou Yannick (to be validated)

Topics of Interest Examples: (will be specified later)

  • Reuse of structural concrete elements
  • Methodologies linking service life durability to environmental impact
  • Structural reinforcement strategies (optimizing steel usage to reduce environmental impact)
  • Off-site construction and BIM integration
  • 3D printing in construction
  • Additional proposals are welcome

Duration: 1h - 1h30
Registration Link: (Time and date to be communicated to interested participants)

Virtual Session 2: Civil Engineering vs AI

The engineering profession is constantly evolving, and the integration of artificial intelligence is transforming our field. This session aims to explore how digital technologies can enhance our work. A Python-based tool developed within the young members' network (TC 2.14 of fib) will be presented, followed by discussions on how AI can be leveraged in structural engineering. The session will conclude with the proposal of an AI-based module to improve an aspect of our profession.

Objective: Development of an AI-based tool for structural design
Guest Speakers: Mr. Morten Engen, Mr. Daniel (to be validated)

Moderator: Mr. Nicola (to be validated)

Topics of Interest:

  • Presentation of the Python module developed within the fib YM network
  • Brainstorming on AI-driven solutions for engineering challenges

Duration: 1h - 1h30
Registration Link: (Time and date to be communicated to interested participants)

Virtual Session 3: Future Perspectives

As young professionals, it is crucial to reflect on the future of our association, the fib. This session will serve as a platform to discuss and define initiatives that will enhance the dynamism and attractiveness of the fib Young Members community.

Objective:  Development of future projects to strengthen and expand the fib YM network
Guest Speakers:  Mr. Martha, Mr. Marcelo (to be validated)

Moderator: Mr Rick (to be validated)

In-Person Sessions on Conference Day

Work Session

The in-person session will be divided into three parts:

  1. A brief introduction to our approach and a recap of the topics discussed during the virtual sessions, allowing those who couldn’t attend to catch up.
  2. Participants will be split into three working groups to finalize the projects initiated in the virtual sessions.
  3. A final discussion to consolidate the outcomes before the restitution session.
  • Location: conference center (room to be specified)
    Date & Time: Monday, June 16, 2025, 17:00 – 18:15 (to be validated)
Registration Link: Sign up to receive updates about this session.

Final Restitution Session

This closing session will present the results of our discussions and projects, followed by feedback from a mentor. The session will be structured as follows:

  • Presentation of the fib Young Members network and an invitation for new participants to join.
  • Summary of the work completed so far.
  • A mentor-led discussion on a key theme, providing guidance and insights.

The event will conclude with a networking cocktail.

Location: conference center
Date & Time: Monday, June 16, 2025, 18:30 – 19:30
